The Summer Grants Program will provide U.S. bioengineers and biomedical engineers funding to pursue a summer (8 weeks) of high-quality research, internship in an industry setting or coursework relevant to their field of focus in biomedical engineering (BME), in an international setting.

Within the Whitaker Summer Grants Program, participants will work in individually-arranged placements in university labs or other appropriate sites where they can participate in projects under the supervision of a mentor.

Objectives

By providing US bioengineers and biomedical engineers with hands-one experience, the Whitaker Summer Grants Program will accomplish the following objectives:

  • Improve the expertise of the participants as scientists;
  • Help developing scientists open their minds to think and analyze on a broader, global level;
  • Build individual as well as institutional partnerships; and,
  • Establish dialogues between the scientific community in the U.S. and rest of the world.

Host Country

Grantees will come from diverse geographic areas of the United States and they will conduct their Whitaker Summer Grant in diverse regions of the world. Candidates may apply to study or do research in any country outside of the U.S., except Canada, because it is contiguous with the United States, and the international experience is minimized.

Host Institution Affiliation

Any international institution that offers an outstanding professional experience in biomedical engineering may serve as a host institution. It is the applicant’s responsibility to select the host institution.

Grant length and start dates

Awards will typically begin July 1st and go through end of August.
