Project Title:
Cardiac Fluid Mechanics and Fluid-Solid Coupling in the Left Ventricle
Project Abstract:
Heart disease is the major cause of death in the western world and is the premiere focus of this research. Cardiac function relies on a conglomerate of interconnected processes (ventricular fluid dynamics (VFM), cardiac electromechanics, myocyte physiology, etc). The challenge of this project is to solve VFM and couple fluid-solid mechanics at the endocardium to simulate cardiac output. Contributing these numerical techniques to the Bioengineering Institute Heart Model, provides a tool for predicting cardiac function under normal and diseased states such as cardio-myopathies, arrhythmias, and ischaemia.
