Hungarian, unlike the languages surrounding it, is not an Indo-European language, but belongs to the Finno-Ugric language group, showing distant relations or resemblances to Finnish, Estonian, Lappish, and a few, little-known languages in Siberia. This resulted in the language being very different from most European languages, e.g., Hungarian does not differentiate between genders and has only one past tense, but is extremely rich in word forms and endings. That said, Hungarian has not developed in isolation, but has been influenced by other languages for many centuries, with imported words from Slavic, Latin, German or Turkish.
